Initiative Measure 688

"Shall the state minimum wage be increased from $4.90 to $5.70 in 1999 and to $6.50 in 2000, and afterwards be annually adjusted for inflation?"

Your Union urges you to vote YES and here’s why:

  • It’s fair. If you work full time, 52 weeks a year… you should not live in poverty. Period.
  • It’s good for the economy. The dire predictions of unemployment and inflation made by the industries that pay poverty wages have never come true. That’s because higher wages don’t disappear into thin air, they circulate into our local economies.
  • It takes the politics out of the issue. By adjusting the minimum wage each year for inflation, we can stop the downward spiral in the minimum wage’s value.
Initiative Measure 200

"Shall government be prohibited from discriminating or granting preferential treatment based on race, sex, color, ethnicity of national origin in public employment, education, and contracting?"

Your Union urges you to vote No and here’s why:

  • It’s deceptive. This is not about "civil rights," it’s about ending affirmative action.
  • It’s a step backward. Banning programs that fight discrimination against qualified applicants will take us back to the day of "good –old-boy" networks and nepotism.
  • It’s backed by anti-worker idealogues. I-200 proponents are the same people who oppose working people and their unions at every step. They want to divide us.
