Convention demonstrates achievements

By CHRIS DUGOVICH

THIS JULY'S Council 2 convention attended by close to 400 members and guests really showed how much the Union has come into its own. Helped by a unique set of circumstances, the Convention came within a breath of having the Vice President of the United States, the honorable Al Gore, address the delegates.
Chris Dugovich
Council 2 President/Executive Director

When at the last minute schedules precluded his attendance, he still managed to take the time to give me a call and address the Executive Board. Maybe not history changing, but it is worth noticing when an individual in his position takes a moment to congratulate us on our accomplishments.
On Saturday, AFSCME Secretary-Treasurer Bill Lucy spoke eloquently of the challenges facing the Union across the Nation and the need to continue to stay active through the 2000 general election. Saving Medicare, Social Security and other vital programs are essential to the country’s well being. He impressed on everyone that the current trend by the conservatives in Congress to give away any surplus as tax breaks to the rich will only hurt working America.

Sims’ speech moved delegates

In the state of Washington a person who really rises above our County and City leaders is King County Executive Ron Sims. His speech Sunday morning clearly moved many delegates. He spoke of the tasks ahead for local government and the importance of providing basic services. Maybe what makes Ron’s presentations most impressive is the knowledge that he really has walked the walk when it comes to helping others one-on-one. He believes in government and the good it can do and, most important, the employees who make it happen!
Other notables who attended included Tacoma Mayor Brian Ebersole and State Insurance Commissioner Deborah Senn.

Convention marks 10 years in office

This convention and my re-election marks the beginning of my third term and close to 10 years as the elected President/Executive Director. Since April of 1982 I’ve had the honor of working on the staff of Council 2. I can tell you it’s always been interesting and continues to be a learning experience. The best thing about the position is the ability to work for the membership and continue to expand our abilities to improve your places of employment.

Message was loud and clear

The convention in Tacoma and the delegates who attended advocate a strong and active Union. They said loud and clear they want their Union to fight the fight and do so aggressively.
Tough decisions were made to ensure this, including adjusting our dues formula in a manner that keeps us financially strong and is also fairer to the individuals who earn less. The vote by the delegates was strongly in favor and sends a real message to the employers that we’re ready, willing and able to take them on!
The convention in Tacoma truly was a success!
