2001 scholarships named
The Council 2 scholarships for 2001 will be named in honor of five people. Details are given below.

The Continuing Education Scholarships will be named for Noreen Towle, Marvin Grevstead and Don Huret.
Noreen Towle died about four years ago from pneumonia. She had worked as a counselor at Stevens County Counseling Services for eight years and was a member of Local 1135-SCC. Noreen worked with addicted youth and adults, helping them regain their lives.

“I cannot tell you the number of lives she touched and the number of people who remember her being there for them when their lives had ‘bottomed-out’,” says Paula Culler, President of Local 1135-SCC.

Marvin Grevstead, a former Union Board member and a member of Local 1652-M for more than 20 years, died a year ago. He had been an active member and continually held office in the Local. At the time he died, he held the positions of Vice President and Shop Steward.
He was able to keep grievances to a minimum and had a passion for the Local, which he had represented at a national Union conference.
Don Huret passed away this year and was a member of Local 618, Thurston County.

The Dependent Scholarship will be named for Brian Samuel Mutt.
Brian Samuel Mutt, the son of Sam Mutt — a member of the Executive Board for Local 109-E for the past 10 years — died in an automobile accident. Only 19 years of age, he was a good, responsible young person and a faithful member of the Monroe Christian Reform Church.

Sam Mutt has served as Shop Steward, Vice President and Steward-at-large and continues to guide members as a mediator and counselor. “He is truly a labor leader, not only with union members, but also with management,” says Gerri Delisle, Vice President of Local 109-E. “I submit his son’s name in honor of Sam for what a wonderful father he was, and for the exceptional Labor Brother he is.”

The Summer School for Women Scholarship will be named for Emily Rosenberg.
Emily Rosenberg was a member of Local 874-HC for 17 years. During this time she served in many offices, from Executive Board member to President. For the last three years she served as Vice President and Secretary at the same time and she was instrumental in keeping AFSCME in Benton County. She also served on committees at the State Convention during her first stint with AFSCME.

Emily Rosenberg was killed in a traffic accident on August 20, 2000.
