The 2001 Legislative Session began January 8th and is off to a slow start. The first month has generated little fanfare and even less legislation. This is due in large part to closeness of the elections that gave neither party a working majority. The House of Representatives is tied with 49 republicans and 49 democrats again!!! For the second session in a row and only the 3rd time in history we have co-speakers of the House and co-chairs of all committees. What does this mean? Nothing moves unless it’s fully agreed to by virtually everyone!
The Senate Democrats hold a one-seat majority that includes a member who threatened to switch parties so there’s not much stability in the upper house. Governor Locke is in the driver’s seat due to his big election victory and veto pen.
These Tim Eyman creations would cripple local government. We want to make sure that the legislature doesn’t overreact to them by passing harmful tax cuts. More later.
You’ve heard it before, but our pension system is one of only three in the country that shut the members out of the process. We need improvements and are working with the Governor’s office to get them.

The statutes that bar our members from performing work are out-dated and in dire need of revamping. The contractors have fed at the public trough long enough!
